Letter To An Editor by Kali Sura

Dear Editor,

Over 3.2 million people get bullied each year. You may think that just because schools have rules that say bullying is not allowed, the problem of bullying is prevented. This is not true! Do you honestly think that just because schools have rules that say bullying is not allowed the bullies will follow these rules? Of course not! I am a victim myself. In fourth grade I was bullied because of my height.

I know from experience that being bullied stinks and that bullies mainly bully people because their hurt or mad or even just jealous. However we can prevent bullying! If we take simple measures such as standing up for the person being bullied we can stop the problem of bullying once and for all! In others words be a buddy not a bully! You may ask how one person standing up for another can stop bullying worldwide. Well if we each stand up to a bully, these acts all add up so that before we know it an entire classroom has helped to stand up against a bully eliminating about 20 problems of bullying once and for all.

One thing you may do is tell a teacher if you see someone getting bullied. Of about the 3.2 million people that are bullied each year, about 90% of them are 4th-8th graders. Nearly all of these incidents could have been prevented if someone would have just had the courage to stand up to the bully and tell them to stop. The worst part is that they will have to live with that horrible memory, just because some kids didn’t have enough courage to stand up to the bully. So once again, be a buddy not a bully! Stand up for what’s right and stop being a bystander! Show the world that bullying can be stopped if one only gathers the courage needed to do it.

Best Wishes,
Kali Sura
