The Mystery of the Three Headed Dog by Kali Sura

The town of Larkspur is home to many mysteries. But perhaps the most mysterious mystery of all is that of a three headed dog. Perhaps you'd like to hear the story? It all started the day a stranger arrived to Larkspur. Not interested huh? Well this stranger is the reason the three headed dog was even in the town! You see this stranger was an animal breeder. Not many of those left today but then again this story is 20 years old. Anyway this animal breeder had brought with him a puppy, some plants and some common household liquids like detergent and soap. You're probably wondering where the three headed dog comes in and why I’m telling about puppies and plants and detergents. This is all necessary for the three headed dog’s birth.

You see this animal breeder was also an expert potion maker. Taking the plants and common household liquids, he made a potion that when drunk would make the given baby animal, full grown and harmless. However something went wrong. When the potion maker/animal breeder gave the potion to the puppy to drink, the puppy grew to over 100 feet and became fully grown! This fully grown puppy then sprouted two heads and proceeded to eat the potion maker/animal breeder in one gulp!

The three headed dog went on a destruction course, wrecking anything that came in it’s way and eating any humans it saw along the street! Many humans fled but there was nowhere they could go that would protect them from the jaws of the monstrous creature. It seemed that there was no one brave enough to take on the dog. Even the police were powerless against it. How you may ask? The three headed dog crushed and ate all their tranquilizers, guns and weapons in the police department. It then proceeded to eat up as many police officers as it could fit in it’s mouths. The rest ran away in fear.

I know what your thinking, this is great and all but where's the mystery?!!!! You see just a couple of hours after the dog had started its destruction course it lay dead in the middle of a street. I know inside your head your going WHAT?!!!! How could a dog that was alive and well 2 hours ago be lying dead in the middle of a street now? The truth is we just don’t know. That is the mystery of the three headed dog.

SNOW by Genevieve Cadwell

I crept out of the house. It was still dawn, but we were bundled up in our winter gear. There was a light snow falling, but it was still super cold.

My sister and I were heading to our secret hideout. Our clubhouse. All of our meetings are held between 3 and 5 A.M. That way, our parents would still be asleep when we return.
We ran throughout the little village we live in. There are only five other girls in our village. All of them are in our club. We ran all the way to the edge of the forest. There was our hideout. In a cave.
Two of their clubhouse members, Chelsea and Lucinda, were already there. They had started a little fire in the firepit we made.

Before long, all of our clubhouse members had arrived. There were seven of us. Me(Melody), my sister(Lexi), Chelsea, Lucinda, Courtney, Henrietta and Morgon-all of us were here.

At 4:30, our meeting was done. We all gathered up our things and left. But as we were having our meeting, it began to snow harder. We could hardly see. Luckily, the seven of us had stuck together. We decided to go back to our warm clubhouse. There was no way we would make it home safely.

At our houses, all of our parents were up. But none of us were home. They must have been worried sick, I thought.
I tried to send them a text, but it wouldn't go send. The only thing I managed to do, was send my Mom a crappy voicemail.
“Mom. We’re in the clubhouse. All seven of us! We’re snowed in!!”

My parents immediately gathered all of our friends parents, and together, they began a journey in the snow.
Three hours later, they found us. By now it was 10:00. But there was still no way home. So now we had nineteen people in our clubhouse/cave. It made it warmer. But we were still cold.

At 2:00 that afternoon, it finally stopped snowing. We climbed out of the cave, and started crawling home.

We were all at my house at 4. We had a party and a sleepover. It was a happy way to end the day!

A tornado of love and kindness by Raghav Goel

A tornado of love and kindness

Leaves not a path of destruction

But a path of reconstruction

Building relationships along the way

And causes love and play

The Mystery of the Man Behind the Mask by Serena Sun

One eerie night,Detective Jana lay on her couch when she heard the doorbell ring.

“Hello, who’s there?” Jana opened the door and a plump old man entered. He wore worn out clothes and had a white goatee.

“Hello my name is Chester and am here to announce you’ve got a new case.”

“Have I even met you?why did you not contact me before you came?”

“First of all, this is my case we are talking about and second of all,I am your good friend Myah’s father. She told me I should talk to you about my case,in fact she refused to let me go anywhere else before I told you that my tower which holds my family is now bent out of shape and has a few stolen items that meant alot to me and my family.”

“I am sorry sir.Of course I will help you with this case.I will talk to Myah and set up a meeting to go deeper into this case. Please tell Myah and the rest of your family not to worry.Get some rest and I will see you tomorrow.Goodnight Chester.”

Detective Jana closed the door, excited for her new case.she went to bed and closed her eyes and had the weirdest dream… . . .
Ring,ring,ring!

“Oh my,what time is it? Oh no.I’m late for my meeting with Chester! Hello?’

“Good morning sleepy pants! I will give you 10 minutes to get ready.Come soon!”said Chester.

“ I am so sorry Mr.Chester! I forgot to set my alarm clock.Don’t worry I’ll be there in a flash!”

“ I am counting on it!”
“ See You soon,”as soon as I hung up,I grabbed my shoes, brushed my teeth, grabbed my detective bag, and was out the door. When I made it to their tower,I had to climb up their super long staircase. As I climbed the stairs, I noticed a few bricks were out of place and occasionally a crash of bricks falling. Now I knew what Chester was talking about. As I entered the room,a warm smile greeted me.

“Hey Jana! It has been so long since I have seen you!”

“Myah! I’ve missed you so much! Sorry for keeping you waiting, like I told Chester, I didn’t set my alarm clock so I came as quick as I could. As a matter of fact,I haven’t even had breakfast yet”,I chuckled at my foolishness.
“My then you must be famished!”Myah’s mom said as she entered the room, holding a laundry basket.
“Good morning Mrs.Denei.I really need to get started on the case. Please don’t feel the need to feed me.I will eat at my house. Now Myah, let’s start.”
“All right.Last night as I was brushing my teeth,I heard a strange noise coming from papa’s room.I slowly walked to his room, the noise got louder and louder.I bit my nails as I entered his room and all of a sudden the noise stopped!”

“That is very odd.I think the noise could reflect that your stolen items might have something to do with this.Is Chester home?”

“Did someone say my name?”Chester said as he entered the room.

“I did.Good morning.Myah just told me about a noise coming from your room last night and I was wondering if you heard anything after you called me?” I was starting to get suspicious.

“Um… I think I heard a little squeal at 12:00.”

“Are you sure you did not hear anything else?” He had a guilty grin on his face.

“Sir i need you to tell the truth,”all of a sudden, he started running and out of the blue,he jumped out of the window!

“Chester!”I ran after him as i heard myah and her mother weeping in the corner.Even though I was terrified, I had to act fast.I climbed down the stairs hoping i wasn’t to late.I ran out the door looking for any sight of him.I was too late.I climbed up the stairs, knowing that that guy was not Chester. The questions I now had were where is the real Chester and who was behind the mask?

When the Mind Is Alone by Ritam Chakrabarti

It was the sixth week of the notes coming, they had been coming for six weeks straight, and what did the notes say? Run Away, Run Away, that's all each note said. Every night when he went to sleep, the next morning there was a note underneath his bed, and the note said run away. His name was Javed, Javed Khan. Javed had messy black hair, and had brown eyes, he had coffee colored skin, and a short stubby nose.

“Javed come down for dinner,” Said his mom interrupting his thoughts.

“Yes ma, I’m coming.” He had set himself to finding out who is putting these notes underneath his bed. Surely it would not be his parents, but then who, no one else comes to this house it was almost in the middle of nowhere.

He slowly munched on his food, trying to favor every bit of it, they were from northern India, his house had rich and stylish architecture, the ceilings had golden indian designs. There were paintings of famous Indian authors. Because his mom loved writing, in fact when she was young she took lots of writing classes. He lived to far away from any school to go to one. So, his mom homeschooled him. His dad had to drive three hours for work everyday. Javed picked at his food, the finally decided to stop picking at it and finished his food hastily,

“So, Vishwan how was work?” Javed’s mom asked.

“Work, work was terrible.” His dad replied. They started rapidly talking, Javed stopped listening. It's not like they really cared about him, except his mom maybe. He went back to his room, he needed a camera so he could see who was putting the note under his bed every day. His dad and mom both did not let him use their phones. So he would have to sneak his mom or dad’s phone, and it give it back before they found out. He decided he would have to sneak his mom’s phone, his parents would describe him as shy and timid. But, truly he wasn’t. After his mom and dad went to sleep he started walking toward their room. Their room was a few feet away from his. His mom always kept her phone on the side table next to the bed. His mom was on the outer side of the bed so this would not be too hard. He slowly started walking trying to make no movement at all, then he opened the door very slowly. Then he gently walked to the side table, and slowly grabbed the phone, and took it back to his room. He pressed the on button but it didn’t on. NO! The phone was out of charge, he slowly crept back and put it back on the side table. Now he needed to get his dad’s phone, but he realized he had no idea where his dad puts his phone. Javed decided he would have to wait till tomorrow night to do this.

He went back to his room, and then thought of another idea what if he stayed up all night and watched, but that wouldn’t work, he needed his sleep. As he tried to go to sleep, he kept on thinking, it can’t be mom but what if it’s dad. Dad never showed any care about me, he thought. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that his dad wanted to get rid of him. His dad always complained that Javed never did any work, and they he complained about paying extra money for his food. So it must be his dad, he thought. Then after a while he rolled into a deep sleep.

He woke up at six a.m. in the morning the next day. Then he went down to eat breakfast. Breakfast was the same as usual, dry, tasteless, pancakes. His mom was getting ready to study him, and his dad had left for work. That was his daily life that’s all he ever got to do. After he sat through four hours of his mom homeschooling him, he ate lunch. His mom started talking about his dad’s internship and stuff like that, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. He didn’t listen a single bit, by now it was about ten thirty a.m., he did his chores, and while he was doing his chores he found his diary, it was under the sofa, he went and put it back in his room. Then he went downstairs again and watched television. In the TV, he saw different amazing places like, America, Australia, and Africa. How he longed to visit those places.

After a few hours of television, he started eating dinner, his dad came home right then. Javed quickly finished his dinner, and went to bed, but before he went to bed, he took his mom’s phone which was in her bedroom. As he walked to his bedroom, he thought mom wouldn’t notice, she doesn’t even care about her phone. He placed it on the top of the dresser in front of his bed. Then put it on camera and pressed the record button. He then, slowly walked up to his bed and rolled under the covers.

“Did Javed go to sleep,” Vishwan asked his wife.

“Yes,”

The rest of the meal they ate in silence.

Javed woke up again at six a.m. the next morning, he crept up to the dresser and grabbed the phone. He pressed on the video he had recorded, he kept on fast forwarding it until he saw movement, but it was himself, getting out of the bed.

“What! How?” Javed saw himself, getting a piece of paper out of his diary, and then writing something. He zoomed in the video, the words said run away.

Then he saw himself putting it under his bed. Javed stopped the video, he ran over to his bed and looked under the bed. There it was, a piece of paper, he picked it up and read it. It said run away. Javed felt so confused, he ripped the paper in pieces and drop the pieces in the garbage. He then went and opened his diary, and read the first page:

I have to run away, get away from here, i can’t spend the rest of my life like this.

Javed read the sentence again, and then read it again, and again. His hands trembled, he threw the diary in the garbage. Javed was down to tears now, he went in his bathroom and wiped his face with a towel. Then he walked downstairs and turned on the television. He looked at the name of the show he was watching. The show name was how to tell if you have symptoms of sort. Javed looked at the TV.
The voice from the television was talking, he paid attention to what the voice was saying.

“Chapter 7, not having self-awareness, this is when you are not aware of what you are doing or what is happening around you.” Javed suddenly paid close attention to what this woman was saying.

“Chapter 8, amnesia, this sometimes happens with not having self-awareness, when you’re doing something you’re not aware of you still are aware a little bit, so that little bit that your aware of, you forget it later when the amnesia clicks in.” Javed turned off the television. Was this what was happening to him, he walked over to the kitchen where his mom was cooking.

“Ma, do any of our ancestors have amnesia, or a case of not having self-awareness?”

“Well, your dad’s mother had amnesia from a very young age. Not having self-awareness, that I‘m not sure anyone in our family had. But, why do you ask?”

“Why do I ask? You and dad don’t even care about what's happening to me! Dad’s always at work, I mean I do understand that he has to get money for us, but even on the weekend's he’s always on the phone with someone! Why did you guys even get a house in the middle of nowhere! I hate my life and you guys!”

“Javed, please calm down.” Javed stopped yelling and took three deep breaths very slowly.

“Javed, when me and your dad had married, we had looked at a very nice house near a wonderful school, and in a nice neighborhood. We had actually moved in, but the only problem was-” Javed’s father came in right then,

“Hello, hone- Javed why is your face so red? Go wash your face right now.” Javed obeyed without saying another word.

“Now, hone-”

“Vishwan, we have to tell him.” Javed washed his hands very quickly, then he walked back to the living room.

“Javed,” His dad said.

“Yes, father,”

“The reason we moved out of that house was because your sister died there.” Javed felt like he had been shot in the heart.

“Wha- what do you mean?” Javed just couldn’t process it all.

“Your sister had been born three years before you had, and she had died in that house from cancer, it was when she was three years old. So we moved out of that house and had come here where we’re all alone, and that's when i had you.” Javed’s mom said.

“But, you don’t understand, I think I have amnesia and I don’t have self-awareness either. Because i’ve been finding notes underneath my bed for some time. So yesterday I took your phone and used it to record myself sleeping. But, iI saw myself getting up and putting notes underneath my own bed.”

“Come on then Javed let’s take you to the doctor,” his mother said.

The drive was amazing through the whole way, when he got to the doctor, that's when things got bad.

“He’ll need to be doing brain exercises for at least six to seven months, and I’ll need one of the parents to monitor him for at least three months, and sleep with him to make sure anything doesn’t happen.”

“Thank you doctor, we will do that from now on.”

Flying Bunnies by Genevieve Cadwell

Can bunnies fly? Of course they can. Well maybe not all bunnies can, but my bunny sure can.

Twilight was writing as she was laying under the stars. But as she got a new idea. She needed to check her idea out.

Twilight sat up and made a wish. Slowly, she was lifted of the ground. She flew herself all the way to a friends house.

She flew across the ocean to her friends house.

Once she reached the lighthouse, she ran up the twisty stairs. Then, she sat down to write.

She wrote with a magical pen. Whatever she wrote, happened in storyland. She needed to go to storyland to learn more about her story.

Once she finished writing, she walked over and turned on the lighthouse light. Then she ran back down the twisty stairs, made a wish, and started to fly.

She flew all the way to storyland. Then, she flew throughout storyland to where her story was being taken place.

She saw her main character, Clarissa, skipping down the dirt path to her house. Then she looked at how well the forest in her story was going along.

But as she was walking throughout the forest she couldn't remember the wayout. She tried to fly away but she couldn't leave the ground. Then she remembered her story. The forest didn't have any magic in it! She tried hopping, but since she mainly flew, she couldn't jump very high. She started calling for help.

Clarissa heard some shouting and ran off to find the person shouting. She found Twilight on the ground crying. Clarissa asked what was wrong and received an answer. Lucky for Twilight, Clarissa knew the woods like the back of her hand.

She led Twilight out of the forest and made her promise she would come back again. Twilight agreed and flew home.

But first Twilight had something to add to her story. But this part was about herself.

Once Twilight was actually done, she flew home to her nice warm bed. Tomorrow she would go and visit Clarissa.

The Swords, Rules, and Moves of Fencing: How to Play by Britta Nathan

Fencing is a French sport that I have learned by doing it!

Here are some of the words you will probably use:
Pret Pronounced like “Pray”, means “Ready”; Oui Pronounced like “We”, means “Yes”; Allez Pronounced like “Al-Ay”, means “Go”

How to do fencing depends on which sword you are using. The swords I use are below.

[Above]
Foil: Good for beginners
Target Area: Torso
Style: Poke

[
[Above]]
Sabre: (Most people’s preference and most common)
Target Area: Waist up
Style: Slash

 [Above]
Epee (My personal favorite and least well known)
Target Area: Whole Body
Style: Slash

When you fence:

1) Face your opponent about 4 feet away.
2) Put on your mask and one person will say, “Pret.”
3) When the other person is ready, they will say, “Oui.”
4) The first person says, “Allez.”

In Posture, (see below) advance and retreat (again, see below) trying to touch the other person with your sword.  How and where depends on the sword, which I covered above.
When someone extends their arm, they have the “Right Of Way”.  This means that they have the right to hit the other person. This means that if the person without the Right Of Way hits first, then the person with the Right Of Way hits, they get the point even though they hit second.  Right Of Way switches people when the blades touch.

There are several ways to play when it comes to points, but I usually play first to five points wins.

2. Posture
Fencing posture depends on whether you are right-handed or left-handed.  Stand with your heels together but your toes apart, so that your feet look like an L.  If you are left- handed, your left foo should be facing forward. If you are right-handed, your right foot should be forward. Keep your feet in an L shape, but move your feet farther apart so that your heels don’t touch anymore.  Don’t put them too far away, just somewhere around the length of your foot. Bend your knees slightly.  Don’t really squat, just relax your legs a little bit and sit a bit lower down than if you were standing up straight. Keep your legs the same, but turn at the waist so that your torso faces to the side.  Turn your head so that you are looking forward. Get one hand out of the way.  Some people like tucking their non-dominant hand behind their back, some prefer holding it above their head.  It’s your choice which you like better. If you’re right-handed, you should be doing this with your left. If you’re left-handed, do this with your right. Now, with the other hand, bend your elbow a little bit and hold it out in front of you.  Do not rest your elbow on your side, hold it out an inch or two. You should be standing like this:

3. Moving Around
1) Find an area with plenty of forward and backward space to move around.  Right to left length doesn’t matter, in Fencing it is against the rules to move in anything but a straight line.
2) Stand the way I taught you in “Posture” above.
3) Advancing
4) Move your front foot forward, not too far!
5) Push off with your back foot
6) Repeat, but keep your steps small and fast.  No running in fencing! No galloping either!

4. Retreating: Do not turn around, just do the steps for Advancing backwards! Move your back foot backwards. Push off with your front foot. Repeat, keeping steps small and fast.

Other Things
1) Lunge
2) Stand in correct posture
3) Extend your arm (When lunging, always do this FIRST)
4) Put your front foot forward far enough that your back leg is straight and your front leg is bent. Move back into correct posture.

I hope this helps you learn a little about fencing and I hope you try it sometime!

The Rainforest by Genevieve Cadwell

Once there were two, cute, twin bears. Brooke and Ben were asleep in their cave. It was 6:00.

Suddenly their alarm went off. They both sat up in bed and yelled

“Como and George are coming today!”

Como and George were their best friends. And today, they were coming over to play.

Each time the friends played, they went on an adventure. Today they were going to a rainforest. Since Como and George were monkeys, they were going to show Ben and Brooke how to swing on vines. They couldn't wait!

“Ding Dong.” Como and George were here. Ben and Brooke rushed to the cave entrance.

“Ben. Brooke. We haven't seen you in forever!”

“We’ve missed you too, Como.”

“Ben. Brooke. Are you ready to check out the rainforest?”

“Swing on vines?”

“You bet ya we’re ready!”

“Okay. So what are we waiting for? Let’s go check out the rainforest!”

Ben, Brooke, Como and George ran all the way to the rainforest. Then when they saw four vines, all lined up next to each other, they ran to catch a ride.

“Okay. We’re going to ride these vines across this valley. Hold on tight! Here we go!!!!!”

“Whee!”

“That was awesome George, Como. But where’s Ben?”

“Ben??! BEN!!!!!!? Where are you?!??” Brooke shouted. Where was her brother?

“Hey. Guys look. There he is!!”

Ben had accidently let go of the vine. He started falling down, down, down. Luckily he grabbed ahold of a cliff and climbed up.

“Guys. We need to call 911 immediately!”

15 minutes later, a helicopter landed on the ledge Ben was stuck on. They loaded him on to the helicopter and examined him.

2 days later, Ben returned home. He had a broken leg, but other then that, he was fine. Everyone signed his cast, and both Ben and Brooke’s mother, and Como and George’s mom said no more adventures without them.

Raghav, the Mummy, and the Business Card by Raghav Goel

I am Raghav Goel, a detective, but I am not like Encyclopedia Brown! He does his detective work in a suburb, but I work around the world.

So I had a case with a live mummy roaming Giza, a city in Egypt, terrorizing the citizens. So of course, I flew there.

When I arrived, I was shocked to see no one there, because Egypt was very popular. Not even one person was out; everyone was thinking the mummy was real, so I thought maybe the people saw the mummy.

So I knocked on a door and someone screamed. I said I was here to investigate about the mummy case, so she let me in.

“When did the mummy appear?” I said.

“Yesterday, the mummy came up in front of an audience and I was there. The mummy roared and everyone ran away!” she said.

“Thanks for the information”

“No problem, just please solve this mystery; no one is leaving their homes”

“Can I have the directions to the incident?”

“Sure. Take a right from here. Then, when you reach the stage, take a left”

“Bye”

Then, I went to the spot where the woman told me the incident happened and found a business card that said Sand 4 Life.

So, I called Sand 4 Life and got everyone that was on the card to come to the incident site. A piece of white cloth fell from one of the people.

Five seconds later, the mummy appeared and scared everyone. I went under the stage, waited for the mummy to turn around and I followed.

He led me to a lab where I found a bunch of mummy making equipment with a lot of the same white cloth and the mummy entered behind me and I said

“You are a fake mummy!”

“ROAR”

I ran out the door and pulled the linen cloth and I yelled “This is the mummy reveal!” and I pulled the bandages.

A person emerged from it and everyone was shocked to see that it was a police officer. The police arrived and arrested the “mummy” and the mummy went to jail and everyone was happy. Another case solved by me.

Review of Tesla: Inventor of the Electrical Age by Lucas Weidner

Nikola Tesla was an eccentric character to say the least. And, in my opinion, no book has been able to capture that aspect and provide an accurate description of Tesla, his genius and his inventions. Many biographies are plagued with admiration, which in it of itself isn’t bad, but it can often lead to inaccurate descriptions of the man. If you want a completely comprehensive, neutral view of Tesla, his childhood, early inventions to his very last days, this is a book for you. Throughout the book, it tells of Tesla’s early successes, his struggles, his dreams, and his eventual fall from fame. While it is an informationally exhaustive read, you will be sure to learn every fact about Tesla, no matter how obscure.

W. Bernard Carlson wrote this book exceptionally well, with every little detail of Tesla contained in this 500 page volume. Complete with footnotes, images and in-depth segments explaining how the Wizard’s (A nickname Tesla was given by the press) inventions actually worked. All I can say is that this is a phenomenal and comprehensive work; I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Raghav, the Ekushka, and the Sari by Raghav Goel

I am Raghav Goel, a detective, but I am not like Encyclopedia Brown! He does his detective work in a suburb, but I work around the world.

So I had this one very strange case about a certain horse called an Ekushka that lives in Indonesia drowning people but it was usually 1 or 2 a year but that year there were 50. So of course, I flew over there.

After I reached the country, everyone was in their homes and I heard crying. I knocked on the door and a woman came to answer. She let me inside.

“(In Hindi) Hi. Can you please tell me about an Ekushka”.

“ (In Hindi) An Ekushka was a horse that looked like a horse used for riding, but it let a person ride them and they were led to the water and the victim was drowned”.

“Thank You”

I went to the swamp where people drowned but there was nothing but a linen cloth that came from a sari, Indonesian traditional clothing for women.

I went back to the village putting the cloth in my pocket and asked people who this could have belonged to. Someone said that it was from Capada, a clothing store, so I went to investigate.

I found the small shack that was working which was strange because no one was outside because of the Ekushka.

Suddenly, someone screamed.

Did someone else die? I went dashing towards the pond and the woman who screamed was right there. Someone was drowned by the Ekushka.

But when I took a glance at the woman, she had the same linen cloth for her sari with a rip in it. I yelled to get the police and 5 minutes later they arrived and arrested the woman for multiple times of murder.  The police asked how I knew it was her.

I said, “I first found the linen cloth.” Taking it out of my pocket, “I heard her scream that someone died. When I noticed the rip in her sari I knew she set this all up.”

The culprit hung her head low and said that she knew how to speak horse so she bribed the Ekushka infinite food to drown people.  So case closed, another mystery solved by Raghav Goel.
