Birthday by Lucy Dreher

Grab the cake, grab the candles.
Blow up the balloons.

You’re 1 then 5,
6 and 9, you grow up so fast.

12 then 14,
17 and 20, a girlfriend you’ve got yourself now.
24 and don’t forget 30,
32 and 36.
Today is your birthday, 37 year old.

But wait, where are you, father of mine.
I’ve been waiting for hours telling this poem.

Now Friday and Saturday,
Sunday then Monday, come back please!
Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday then Friday.

Oh Hi! Happy birthday!
